Ferrari conveys more air to SF21 hybrid system

For Ferrari, erasing the unfortunate 2020 world championship is a must. Leaving behind an unhappy year by recovering the lost ground and bringing the historic Italian team back to the center of the fight for the top. The first fire up of the new engine mounted on the SF21 took place yesterday morning. For a few seconds, the sound of the new V6 Turbo engine filled the silence within the vehicle’s assembly area. Just to check that everything works perfectly without any trouble.

Thanks to our photographic comparison of the Airscope area, it is quite easy to notice how the profile is now more rounded and divided into 4 well-defined areas: the central ones bring air to the compressor, while the two sides are used as cooling for the power unit. A solution that Ferrari had already adopted in the 2017 season starting with the Malaysian Grand Prix, then preserved, refined and proposed again in the SF71-H in the 2018 season.

This new configuration could be the consequence of a different internal displacement. The hybrid system radiators may have been moved at the rear, freeing up some space in the sidepod areas, requiring more air intake. At the same time, it has given the Ferrari’s aerodynamicist the opportunity to refine the sidepod area. In addition to the widening of the ears, on the SF21 the two “horns” placed on the sides of the Airscope, used to clean the flows directed towards the rear of the car, have disappeared.

To find out more about the subject, we can only wait for the launch of the SF21 that, according to Mattia Binotto himself, will take place with two online events scheduled for Friday, February 26 and Wednesday, March 10, 2021.
